Why was WhatsApp down?

WhatsApp was unavailable for more than an hour, on Tuesday.

Messages cannot be sent or received by users. Personal and group chats were both affected.

"We are aware that some people are currently experiencing difficulties sending messages, and we are working to restore WhatsApp to everyone as soon as possible." A spokesperson from Meta stated.

The WhatsApp outage seem to be global.

WhatsApp did not issue an official statement, but the hashtag #WhatsAppDown was trending on Twitter, and users from Indonesia, Kenya, and some Spanish-speaking territories other than India were reporting issues with the messaging app.

In October 2021, WhatsApp was unavailable for approximately six hours due to a major DNS failure. The Domain Name System, or DNS, is a service that converts human-readable hostnames to raw, numeric IP addresses.
