Over 60 dead after recently renovated bridge collapses in Gujarat's Morbi

The bridge fell because it could not support the weight of the people standing on it

Several women and children were on the hanging bridge when it collapsed, according to eyewitnesses.

Brijesh Merja, Minister for Gujarat Panchayats, who is on the scene of the event, stated that "more than 60 persons have killed."

PM Modi has also announced an ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from PMNRF for the next of kin of each of those who lost their lives in the mishap in Morbi. The injured would be given Rs. 50,000.

According to DG NDRF Atul Karwal, three National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams from Gandhinagar, Vadodara, and a third team waiting to be flown hurried to the Gujarat bridge collapse scene.

The bridge was recently reopened for the public after renovation, said officials.
